St. Stanislaus College School Website

Welcome

Welcome to the official website of the St. Stanislaus College Farm.

The St Stanislaus College Farm Complex is located at 69 North Sophia, Greater Georgetown, Guyana. The Complex now comprises the St.  Stanislaus College Farm (SSCF), the St. Stanislaus Training Centre (SSTC), the Dairy Products Unit (DPU) and the Greenhouse Vegetable Production Unit. The 13 acre Complex is owned by the St. Stanislaus College Association (SSCA) formerly the St. Stanislaus Old Boys Association. The SSCA upholds the St Stanislaus College Farm, sometimes referred to as ‘Saints Farm’ or the ‘Dairy Farm’ as a premiere training institution for agriculture students, technicians and farmers in Guyana. Farming operations are implemented using sound scientific techniques making the optimum use of resources and improved technology, which ensure the following:

  • Adding value to products thereby increasing financial returns;
  • Use of renewable and recyclable resources (solar energy, manure, etc.);
  • Use of environmentally-friendly material;
  • Strict adherence to safety and health regulations; and
  • Overall implementation of best practices.

The SSCF focuses primarily on livestock rearing; the main enterprises being poultry and dairy cattle. When the Dairy Farm was established in 1975, the initial vision included the following:

  • To have a demonstration farm to promote new dairy technologies in order to serve as a catalyst to produce the required improvements in the dairy industry;
  • To have a farm where farmers could be shown that the use of improved technology increases profit; and
  • To have a commercial farm to use as a tool to train, farmers, farm staff, students and technicians in the use of the improved technologies.

The farm has long since achieved all of its objectives and in addition the following have been achieved:

  • A number of new technologies have been introduced over the last two decades and milk production on the farm increased from 0.5 gal/cow/day in 1983 to 3.0 gal/cow/day in 2007.
  • The economic health of the farm has improved since 1985.
  • As a training tool, the farm has been used to train more than 10,000 persons, from Guyana and the rest of Caricom.
  • For more than 30 years, the farm has supplied a high quality of milk at competitive prices.

Today the SSCF offers not only raw milk and poultry as it did in the 1970’s and 1980’s but the farm also:

  • Produces humus, compost and biogas;
  • Produces greenhouse vegetables;
  • Produces dairy products;
  • Has an Integrated Fish and Duck Enterprise; and
  • Has a small sheep unit.

The achievements of St. Stanislaus College Farm are unrivalled in the annals of Guyana’s agricultural history.

The rest of the pages of this website deal with the history of the farm, the various current enterprises and future projects.
